In Chinese, the word for heart and mind are the same. When we slow down, our hearts and minds come into sync.

What is stress?

Recognizing it early changes your quality of life

Stress is the body’s reaction to pressure, tension, and change. Recognizing the early signs of stress and learning to deal with them can make an important difference in the quality of life. Life without stress can be dull and uneventful. Life with too much stress can be debilitating and distressful.

Signs of stress

Cold hands, rapid breathing, rapid heartbeat, headaches, neck and low back pain, muscle tension, spasm, poor sleep, and decreased immunity leading to susceptibility to illness.

Acupuncture, Acupressure and Chiropractic release muscle tension, blocked circulation and qi/energy flow, thereby harmonizing and balancing the body and emotions, creating a deep sense of calm… naturally.

How AcuCalm is booked

AcuCalm is an individual, one-to-one acupuncture treatment aimed at stress, anxiety and sleep disorders. You book it the same way you book any other visit with Dr. Geri — call or text (818) 324-1539, or use the form below.

Reducing stress through the five senses

Simple, natural practices Dr. Geri recommends to her patients — walking, swimming, yoga, Tai chi, meditation and short naps, plus slow hobbies like gardening, painting, music, photography, making sand castles and reading.

Seeing

When we look into the distance instead of at our computers or phones, we balance the eye muscles and at the same time “get out of our heads” — relaxing the mind and clearing both inner and outer vision.

Hearing

Listening to soothing music, the sounds of nature, or our own deep breaths in silence naturally calms us. Dr. Geri recommends Mindfulness, Meditation by Jon Kabat-Zinn, and the soothing Canyon Trilogy by R. Carlos Nakai — the music you hear in the office.

Taste

Certain foods and herbs are naturally calming: berries, bananas and apples to name a few, along with chamomile and mint tea.

Touch

The entire body is represented on the ears, so massaging the ears is an easy way to relax wherever you happen to be.

Smell

Our sense of smell is 10,000 times more sensitive than our other senses. Lavender calms the mind and anxiety; grapefruit and mint clear frustration, lift our spirits and help us re-focus. Put 6–10 drops of essential oil in a spray bottle with 6 oz of water, then spritz lavender on your pillow, or mint or grapefruit in the air at work or in the car.

Breathing

Find a comfortable position and consciously soften any obvious tension. Bring your attention to the sensations of your breathing — coolness in the nostrils, movement of the chest, the rise and fall of the belly. When your mind wanders, gently bring your attention back to the next breath. Focused on the breath, the whole body and mind quiet down.

Books and music for calming the mind

Books: Wherever You Go, There You Are by Jon Kabat-Zinn; 100 Ways to Keep Your Soul Alive by Frederic & Mary Ann Brussat; Sacred Time by Gary Eberle; Flow by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi; and The Extraordinary Power of Ordinary Things by Larry Dossey.

Soothing and centering music: Canyon Trilogy by R. Carlos Nakai (played in the office), Windham Chill 1 & 2, Narada Collection 3, Narada Sampler 3, and Acoustic Therapy Relaxation. Other favourites include George Winston, Liz Story, Jim Chappell, Michael Hedges, David Lanz and Eric Tingstad.

Aromatherapy: in a spray bottle, combine 6 oz of water with 6–10 drops of essential oil and spray on your pillowcase and sheets before bed, or use a scent ball plugged into the wall. Lavender calms the mind and decreases agitation; mint and grapefruit clear frustration, lift spirits and focus concentration.
